Lycamobile expands to U.S. market

Lycamobile officers at Los Angeles launch of U.S. operations.

LOS ANGELES—For the first time, Lycamobile, the largest global provider of low-cost international mobile calls, will become available to customers in the United States, the prepaid mobile SIM card provider announced this week.

The service will launch as the country’s “first full mobile virtual network operator (MVNO)” and will operate in 18 States including New York, Florida, Texas and California with nationwide GSM coverage.

It has acquired over 30 million customers across Europe and Australia—16 countries in all– in just seven years, and the company is the leader in its market in most of the countries it operates in. Its low-cost international and national calls mobile service has proved popular. The expansion to the U.S. increases the company’s presence to 16 countries.

““As the first full MVNO to launch in the United States, this is a milestone operation both for Lycamobile and for American customers who we look forward to helping connect with their loved ones across the world,” says Subaskaran Allirajah, Lycamobile chairman.

The addition of Germany to its portfolio in 2012 ensured Lycamobile a greater coverage of the European market than any other mobile operator. A subsequent move into Ireland and Portugal served to embed Lycamobile’s footprint across Europe, covering over 80 percent of the EU population.

The U.S. launch features strong national advertising, targeted customer segment campaigns, competitive offers and trade marketing with major retailers across the various States.

The service will launch with two bundles; one at $29,which will give the customer unlimited nationwide talk, text and data with the added benefit of unlimited international calls to 50 selected countries.

The other bundle at $39 offers the same unlimited nationwide talk, text and data and a wider range of 65 countries for unlimited international calls. SIM cards will be available from a wide range of retailers and through the website offering nationwide delivery.
