In more ways than one, the 2013 Isuzu Alterra Urban Cruiser X is like the world-famous Mt. Mayon in Bicol. Both, for one, are pretty on the outside and tough on the inside.

No less than Ryoji Yamazaki, president of the Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC), made the striking observation during the launch of the latest iteration in the highly successful Alterra series two weeks ago.

“Both are waiting to be discovered,” Yamazaki said. “The all-new Alterra Urban Cruiser X has a sophisticated look that makes it stand out from the rest. It offers the best value in the country’s full-size SUV segment.”

THERE’S no mountain higher for a power SUV like the Alterra Cruiser X the newest models of which are seen parked at the Cagsawa Ruins offering a view of the Mt. Mayon.

First launched in 2005, the flagship SUV model was introduced during the 4th Philippine International Motor Show in August. The car company took motoring reporters to Bicol to give them a first-hand experience with the new Alterra.

With its new range of equipment, the Alterra Urban Cruiser X is an excellent choice for young professionals and entrepreneurs who seek an SUV that carries an image of superiority and youthfulness.

“The fact that this premium SUV is highly capable of taking on the urban jungle as much as it could the scenic countryside makes it quite ideal for people who are always on the go,” Yamazaki said.

With plenty of cabin space for loved ones and luggage, the Alterra Urban Cruiser X is ideal for recreational activities on weekends and long drives as it gives passengers the most comfortable ride on the journeys that matter. It even comes ready with a dual-zone navigation system to help motorists locate their destination without breaking a sweat.

AMID the chill of an early morning drive through the thick fog, the Alterra has proven to be a dependable traveling companion.

Here are some of the new features of the 2012 Isuzu Alterra Urban Cruiser X:

1. A more advanced entertainment system

A weekend getaway isn’t complete without a powerful entertainment system. With Kenwood on the helm, the Alterra features powerful 240-watt front speakers and 280-watt rear speakers. With a built-in 7-inch-wide touch panel monitor, an iPod direct connector, integrated Bluetooth connectivity, and an SD card reader, there won’t be any shortage of tunes while navigating rough and challenging road conditions on long drives.

2. Spruced up interior

The Alterra’s interior got an upgrade with the classy black leather trim that are matched with black woodgrain accents. This gives the vehicle a look of sophistication that makes passengers experience what it feels like to be in the lap of luxury, quite literally. Passengers in the backseat can also enjoy the new black, headrest-mounted, high-definition LCD monitor that delivers vivid images from videos of your own choice.

3. New exterior features

There are plenty of new additions in the Alterra’s exterior: the elegantly rugged front chin, the European-inspired rear chin with reflector, smoked headlamps, redesigned foglamp, stepboards finished in black, functional rear spoiler with integrated high-mount LED stop lamps, and smoked combination taillight clusters with chrome accents.

All these new features update the Alterra’s premium styling, while the vehicle’s two-eye reverse sensors and wide-range reverse camera (which displays images in the entertainment system’s touch screen monitor), aid the driver in backing up parking spaces and other tight spots.

The new Alterra, of course, wouldn’t be one if it weren’t for the powerful features that have made it a favorite among thousands of motorists in the country.

The Isuzu’s 4JJ1-TC-iTEQ 3.0-liter diesel engine is environment-friendly, complying with Euro 3 emission standards. Equipped with a turbocharger and intercooler, plus a common rail direct injection system, the engine produces 144 hp and 294 Nm of torque.

On both urban roads and rough terrain, ride comfort is ensured by the Alterra’s independent double wishbone with torsion bar springs and stabilizer bar front suspension, and Isuzu’s patented Flex Ride MOVE suspension with semi-elliptical leaf springs with telescopic shock absorbers in the rear.

The Alterra is available in 4-wheel drive with 4-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive with 4-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive with 5-speed manual transmission. The Alterra comes in Starry Black, Mineral Gray and Silky Pearl White colors with optional pearl finish.

Prices start at P1.528 million for the monotone and P1.54 million for the pearl option on the 4×2 MT variant, P1.585 million for the monotone and P1.595 million for the pearl option on the 4×2 AT variant, and P1.718 million for the monotone and P1.728 million for the pearl option on the 4×4 AT top variant.
